Oceanic Popular Culture Association Conference Weekend Events–Both Free

  • FRIDAY AFTERNOON SPECIAL –AL HARRINGTON REVEALS HAWAII FIVE-O EXPERIENCES
    WHEN:
    3 p.m. on Friday, May 27
    WHERE: Vi & Paul Loo Student Center, in Clarence T.C. Ching Hall; Chaminade University, 3140 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816
    WHO: Dr. Stanley Orr, UH West Oahu English professor, will interview Al Harrington (Detective Ben Kokua on the classic Hawaii Five-O series).
    WHAT: Harrington will speak on his years with the original (1972-75) series and now on the current Hawaii Five-0 series.

  • SATURDAY NOON TALK — FOCUS ON NEW ZEALAND FILM
    WHEN:
    12 noon on Saturday, May 28
    WHERE: Vi & Paul Loo Student Center, in Clarence T.C. Ching Hall; Chaminade University, 3140 Waialae Avenue, Honolulu, HI 96816
    WHO: Featured speaker is Dr. AnnaMarie Christiansen, associate professor of English at BYU Hawaii. Born in Australia and raised in the continental U.S., Christiansen is of Maori heritage, affiliated with the Nga Puhi tribe.
    WHAT: Presentation focuses on New Zealand director Taika Waititi’s 2010 film, “Boy” — a coming of age film described by one critic as “a Kiwi son of Rambo  with Michael Jackson added.” Her research interests include Oceanic literatures, African literatures, cultural studies and critical pedagogy.
