HONOLULU—December 2, 2011—Chaminade University will hold its 2011 Fall Commencement Ceremony on Monday, Dec. 12, at 7 p.m., in the Neal S. Blaisdell Arena. More than 200 students will receive their degrees at the free public event.
Featured keynote speaker for commencement will Darren T. Kimura. Kimura is currently the CEO, CHB, president and founder of Sopogy. He has been recognized as the “Emerging Entrepreneur of the Year”, SBA “Young Entrepreneur of the Year”, “Green Entrepreneur of the Year”, an EPA “Energy Pioneer”, Hawaii Business Magazine “10 for Today” and received the “Honua Clean Energy Award”. He currently serves on the board of directors for PBS Hawaii, Enterprise Honolulu, Chamber of Commerce of Hawaii, Hawaii Academy of Science and the Blue Planet Foundation. Originally from Hilo, Hawaii, Kimura began his energy career in the early 90’s in the Pacific Northwest working in the energy efficiency sector. In 1994 he founded Energy Industries which is today one of the largest private energy services company in the US. He later founded Energy Laboratories a technology incubator, Sopogy a solar technology manufacturer, Energy Smart News which was later sold to the Cleantech Network, Keahole Solar Power a renewable energy developer and operator and The Enerdigm Group a private investment company funding clean energy ventures.
Student speakers featured included Soane Petelo Uiagalelei, as salutatory undergraduate speaker, and Kealoha Aha Tauaefa, as salutatory graduate speaker. Uiagalelei graduates magna cum laude earning Bachelor’s Degrees in Psychology and Religious Studies. He was chosen as this semester’s Outstanding Graduate in Religious Studies. Tauaefa is receiving her Master of Science degree in Criminology and Criminal Justice Administration and is a two-time recipient of a scholarship from Executive Women International Honolulu Chapter.
