HONOLULU—December 16, 2013—Chaminade University will confer an honorary doctorate degree (Doctor of Humane Letters, Honoris Causa) on Alfred L. Castle, Executive Director of the Samuel N. and Mary Castle Foundation, at tonight’s 2013 Fall Commencement Ceremony on Dec. 16 at the Neal Blaisdell Arena.
Commencement starts at the Neal Blaisdell Arena, located at 777 Ward Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96814, at 7 p.m. and is estimated to last two hours. Family and friends are welcome to attend this event in recognition of all graduating students. More than 300 students have successfully petitioned for their degrees. The event is FREE and no tickets are required. Parking at the Arena is $7.
Alfred L. Castle has served for the past 16 years as Executive Director and treasurer for the Hawaii-based foundation, one of America’s oldest foundations. He is a national and regional leader advocating for strong early education systems in Hawaii and nationally and has directed much of his advocacy work to ensuring educational equity for at-risk children. Under his direction, the Foundation has invested over $25,000,000 in pre-school renovations and construction, teacher training and scholarships, low-income tuition assistance for preschool families and funds to innovate in pre-k curricula, outcomes assessment and parent engagement. To supplement the funds invested in Hawaii by his Foundation, Castle also raises funds from other state-based foundations as well as national foundations. He has served on numerous non-profit boards on the mainland and Hawaii including the Executive Office of Early Learning Board, Grant Makers for Children Youth and Families and the Federal Philanthropy Fund.
