HONOLULU, HI (January 16, 2014) — Chaminade University announces a $100,000 gift that will be used towards a new Coaches’ Office Complex as part of the University’s forthcoming development of comprehensive Intercollegiate Athletics Facilities. Mrs. Sara Platte, and her brothers, Mr. Melvin Schantz Jr. and Mr. Eric Schantz, made the gift in honor of their parents who are longtime supporters of the University. Construction on the complex that will house the Melvin and Merriam Schantz Coaches’ Conference and Recruitment Room is expected to start later this year.

“Our family has been a part of the Chaminade ‘ohana for many years and our parents are strong advocates of Chaminade’s dedication to supporting student athletes,” said Platte. “We felt this was a perfect opportunity to support Silversword athletics while also honoring our parents who served as our ‘life coaches.’ We learned many life lessons through the sports we played and know first-hand that good coaches can have a huge impact on a young person’s life!”

The collective gift is among the largest received so far for the athletics facilities. The overall project will include a 2,400 square foot coaches’ offices complex and a 3,450 square foot training center. The new amenities will help provide a richer campus life for student athletes, coaches and staff who are currently confined to meager facilities located in separate areas throughout the Kalaepohaku property.

Chaminade University President Bro. Bernard J. Ploeger, SM, Ph.D., said, “We are so grateful to the Schantz and Platte families for their continued partnership and support over the years. This gift in particular will help bolster our Silversword pride, increase visibility for Chaminade athletics, and set a positive example of philanthropy among our leadership and community.”

An original member of the PacWest Conference and founders of the annual Maui Invitational Tournament, Chaminade serves as home to 10 men’s and women’s Intercollegiate Athletics Sports Teams, with one in ten students participating in Silversword athletics.

Educating students for life, service and successful careers since 1955, Chaminade University offers programs of study grounded in the liberal arts with day, evening, online and accelerated courses. For more information, visit www.chaminade.edu or call (808) 735-4711. ###
