NATIVE HAWAIIAN SERVING INSTITUTION GRANT TO SUPPORT FACILITIES RENOVATION AND CAMPUS TECHNOLOGY OVER FIVE YEARS-
Chaminade University received notice of its largest grant ever, a grant from the US Department of Education program for $2 million, renewable annually over five years for a total of $10 million, as a part of its Alaskan Native/Native Hawaiian Serving Institution Title III program.
The Title III program awarded 24 new grants in Hawaii totaling more than $20 million with Chaminade receiving the top amount available to be allocated to any single institution. The grant will be instrumental in the university’s efforts to renovate and improve five of its academic buildings and student support facilities. The remainder will provide next generation information technology systems in all of the university’s classrooms, appropriate computing capabilities for faculty and a new learning management system to support both on-line and in-classroom learning.
As an access institution, Chaminade serves approximately 15% Native Hawaiian/ Pacific Islanders who make up its undergraduate student body and who will directly benefit from the campus improvements and technology enhancements. Approximately half of the undergraduate students are first-generation college students.
“I couldn’t be more pleased to share this good news,” said Chaminade president , Bro. Bernard Ploeger, SM, PhD. “The grant will be transformational for the campus and for the Native Hawaiian students we serve.”
Since 2002, the US Department of Education Title III program has provided a total $35 million in funding for Chaminade.
