Honolulu, Hawaii (Sept. 17, 2014)–Chaminade University announced that it will now offer a Registered Nurse (RN)  pathway to a Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) degree. The bulk of the degree program will be offered online through Chaminade’s Office of Professional and Continuing Education (PACE), which will allow current RNs to complete their degree while continuing to work. Applications are being accepted now with nursing courses beginning summer 2015. The program will be offered pending approval from the WASC Senior College and University Commission (WSCUC) Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) can be completed in as little as 18 months.  A total of 24 students (full time or part-time cohorts available) will be admitted in the inaugural class to ensure a low student to faculty ratio.

“This accelerated program is critical for hospitals in Hawaii and elsewhere that are seeking ‘magnet status’ which requires higher training and educational levels, including the requirement for nurses to have their BSN,” said Patricia Kiladis, dean of Chaminade’s School of Nursing. “We have designed a high quality curriculum which responds to an immediate need in the community.”

The Institute of Medicine (IOM) in its 2008 Future of Nursing Report issued a call to action to increase the proportion of nurses with baccalaureate degrees to 80% by 2020. According to the IOM, nurses with a BSN degree  possess the skills, knowledge, and abilities needed to manage the increasing complexity of both patients and the healthcare system.
