Chaminade University announced a gift from Dr. Edison H. Miyawaki of $1 million, at its annual booster club event held today at Waialae Country Club. The gift, to benefit Chaminade’s intercollegiate athletics program and its student athletes, will be used to help fund the construction of a new athletics training, locker room and sports medicine building.

Situated mauka of the McCabe Gymnasium, the new facilities will replace and greatly expand the current facilities, provide contemporary locker rooms and sports medicine support for Chaminade’s student athletes, and improve accommodations for visiting teams and game officials.  Expected to be completed by fall 2017 along with the coaching office complex now in progress, the building will be named the Dr. Edison H. and Sallie Y. Miyawaki Family Athletics Center.

Chaminade’s president, Bro. Bernard Ploeger, SM, PhD, and athletics director, William “Bill” Villa, with booster members were all on hand to express their overwhelming gratitude.

“We are thankful for Dr. Miyawaki’s commitment to our students and our intercollegiate athletics program.  He has been instrumental in advancing athletics at Chaminade both during his time on our Board of Regents and continuing at present as a regent emeritus,” said Bro. Ploeger.

 

Villa reiterated how vital a supporter Dr. Miyawaki has been for the university’s intercollegiate athletics program.  “We are so very grateful for his years of dedication to our student athletes and our sports program.  Dr. Miyawaki also chairs and has been the visionary of Chaminade’s Intercollegiate Athletics Gala, which has grossed well over a $1 million since its inception. He has been an outstanding and generous leader, inspiring us to press forward in achieving our shared vision for a great intercollegiate athletics program for our students.”

The mission of the Chaminade University Intercollegiate Athletics Department is to provide an opportunity for all qualified students to participate in competitive intercollegiate athletics while developing leadership and team building skills. Chaminade University sponsors 10 intercollegiate sports teams including teams  in  men’s  and  women’s  basketball,  men’s  and  women’s  cross  country, men’s golf, men’s and women’s soccer, women’s softball, women’s tennis  and   women’s   volleyball.   More than 10 percent of Chaminade’s day undergraduate students participate in the university’s intercollegiate athletics program.  All teams compete in the Pacific West Conference.  Comprised of 14 Division II schools, the PacWest Conference is   the   largest,   most   geographically   diverse conference competing at the   NCAA Division II level.
