RENOWNED VENTURE CAPITALIST AND PROUD CHAMINADE ALUMNUS MATTHEW HOWARD ’89 RETURNS TO ALMA MATER AS KEYNOTE SPEAKER
HONOLULU—April 28, 2016— Chaminade University will celebrate its 58th Commencement on May 9, starting at 7 p.m. in the Neal Blaisdell Arena, located at 777 Ward Avenue, Honolulu, Hawaii 96814. Approximately 486 students will graduate this semester. Nearly 400 plan to participate in the ceremony with friends and family cheering them on with lei and aloha. They will be especially cheered on by proud Chaminade alumnus Matthew Howard, BBA ’89, who is a renowned venture capitalist and this commencement’s keynote speaker.
Howard is a managing partner at Norwest Venture Partners, a leading global venture capital and growth equity firm that manages over $6 billion in capital. Howard has appeared on the Forbes Midas List as a top 100 investor for three years and was recently recognized by Business Insider as one of the “19 Best Enterprise Tech Venture Capitalists.” Featured on AlwaysOn’s list of “Power Players in the Cloud,” he has served in multiple operations roles including 30 years of marketing, product management, engineering, business development, and sales experience across a wide range of technologies.
Howard currently serves on the board of directors of seven private and public technology companies. More than 17 of his portfolio companies have had initial public offerings or have achieved successful merger and acquisitions success. In addition, he invests in entrepreneurs in the mobile, security, rich media, cloud based services/applications, networking and storage sectors. Before joining Norwest and as an early employee of Cisco, Howard established Cisco’s security and VPN strategy. This situated Cisco as the leading firewall appliance manufacturer and launched the first load-balancing product. Previously, he served as vice president of Marketing at Vertical Communications. He has held various positions at Digital Equipment Corporation, BDM International, and Bolt, Beranek and Newman (BBN) Communications Corporation. He began his career as a cryptological analyst with the U.S. Naval Security Group. Matt holds one patent in mobility and four in cyber security. The five software patents were achieved while working with Norwest portfolio companies.
The salutatory student speakers will be Starr Angelique Sanchez (undergraduate representative), receiving her B.S. in Criminology and Criminal Justice, and Glacen Mae Laguitan Florita (post-graduate representative), receiving her M.B.A.
